January 1941. "Harrisonburg, Virginia." Braking at the door till someone lets it in. Medium format acetate negative by John Vachon for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.
Before reading his name, i knew that picture was from John Vachon. What a talent!
They don't open the door for peddlers.
Looks to be a late 1930's Wards Hawthorn bicycle with a New Departure two speed rear hub.
Dave’s line “Braking at the door till someone lets it in” puts me in mind (cadence + theme of ice and snow) of the title of Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.”
Imagine trying to ride that bicycle on those icy streets.
