Charleston, South Carolina, circa 1906. "Old market house (Public Market), Meeting Street." 5x7 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
Thanks for posting that pic of the building as it is today - I was certain it would have been demolished long ago, how lovely that somehow it has managed to avoid becoming a victim of "progress".
Wow, what a great photo long years later. And, the same shot no less! Well done
Below is the same view from July of 2010.
Nice classical cow and sheep skull dado running along the plinth. The Americans With Disabilities Act was not even a glimmer in anyone's eye when this was constructed.
One of Chucktown's more impressive and truly gorgeous historic buildings, tucked into the northwest corner of the French Quarter. It still looks the same in every detail. The wrought iron is painted verdigris green; the stucco walls are a honey yellow. Only a few blocks to Magnolia's on East Bay for your shrimp and grits, and steps from there to Waterfront Park and a cool rest on one of the big swings.
Wonder what that gentleman is reading?

I would be shocked to know that this building was originally constructed for a Public Market, indeed it looks more like a Mausoleum or a City Hall. Perhaps some Shorpyites could enlighten further. One of my favorite photos of late regardless, thanks.
[The market is the arcade on the lower level stretching off into the distance. The sign over the door upstairs gives a clue as to what's there. - Dave]
