1905. "Men posing with team of horses hauling giant spruce log 30 feet in circumference. Cascade Mountains, Washington." Gelatin silver print by Darius Kinsey. View full size.
Darius Kinsey took a number of photos at the logging camps our great-grandfather co-owned between Skykomish and Seattle. in 1906 he caught the Skykomish Camp baseball team, with our 3-year-old grandfather in the middle as their mascot, before they headed down the logging train tracks to the next camp for a game.
Once we realized we had Kinsey originals, the family donated them to the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, and received a copy for each of us to have. My photo isn't Shorpy quality as it's taken through the glass as it sits framed on the wall, but it's one of the rare photos of both our grandpa and a time long gone.
That in 2020 they would log in to Shorpy!
Read "Eighteen Men and a Horse," the story of the first loggers in Washington.
In addition to solid photographic skills, Kinsey used a dash of whimsy in crafting his signature on this image.
I told ya boys, I'll buy a hat as soon as we get paid. And If I told ya once, I told ya a thousand times, I'm an individualist to boot!
