August 1940. "Two women living on the main street of Upper Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania." Acetate negative by Jack Delano for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.
Mauch Chunk was later renamed Jim Thorpe after the great American athlete. He won medals in the Olympics and played multiple sports both amateur and professional. He was a Native American who was a member of the Sac and Fox Nation. Thanks for the photos. I really enjoy them.
That's a heck of a first step.
I'm willing to bet, based on the time of year of this picture and the bulge of something heavy wrapped up in the apron of the woman on the left, that she is trying to pawn off her excess zucchini squash to the other woman who really doesn't look very interested in taking any!
