Hartford, Connecticut, circa 1906. "Colt's Armory." Samuel Colt's historic firearms factory on the banks of the Connecticut River. 8x10 inch glass negative. View full size.
Yep, most of the buildings are still there and they've just about completed transforming that complex into housing. Next to the Colt Building is historic Dillon Stadium, built in the 1920s and also recently renovated for the professional soccer team Hartford Athletic.
I remember going to Dillon Stadium just before in closed in the mid-2000s and that whole area was a dump - Dillon included. It has experienced a nice turnaround in the last decade. Went to a couple soccer games last year and that whole area, including the Hooker Brewery in one of the former Colt buildings, is a very nice touch.
Always happy to see a sturdy well made structure saved from the wrecker's ball and repurposed 150 or so years later. So many great old buildings lost. Ours to developers, Europe's to WW2 bombs.
What I find most fascinating is that this building still exists and that you can still see the weathering where the walkway on the right once was attached.
I would attach the Street View of it but I have not figured out how to do that.
[Here's how. - Dave]
Kind of ironic that an architectural feature that's so closely associated with Orthodox churches would be used to adorn a gun factory.
This former factory that built "the gun that won the West" now houses apartments and businesses. I can see the onion dome from my window.
