I have never seen brake slack adjusters like those. They appear to be approaching the end of adjustment, brake job time.
When I was younger, the shop I worked at serviced the vehicles for the Fire Department. A hook and ladder came in with a squeak. Determined it was a universal joint on the driveshaft. Brought out our high pressure compressed air operated grease gun and let it rip. A big gob of old gritty grease shot out. I had not yet learned to keep my mouth shut so it wedged in the corner of my mouth.
To paraphrase James Bond, "I’d say it was a 5-year-old Valvoline with an overdose of antioxidants."
Not every photographer would crawl on a filthy floor underneath a really dirty truck to photograph a guy putting grease in a rear differential.
