New York circa 1912. "Tanis Guinness and Ta Wang." Tiny Tanis, the future wife of songwriter Howard Dietz, was heiress to the Guinness brewing fortune. 5x7 glass negative, George Grantham Bain Collection. View full size.
If she had married (or consorted with) a fellow nicknamed Blackie, they would have been announced as "Blackie & Tan" -- perfect for a Guinness heiress.

Like many fashionable women of the time, Tanis Guinness accumulated a fine collection of husbands. She threw over her first spouse, the Hon. William Montagu, for the Earl of Carnarvon, only to stand him up at the altar and run away with Howard Dietz. Fourteen years later they divorced and she married a Royal Navy veteran, Lt. Cmdr. Charles Philips.
