October 10, 1921. Charleston (vicinity), West Virginia. "Alice Curtis and some of her poultry." Photograph by Lewis Wickes Hine. View full size.
... well, having eventually to put up with being stripped naked and made to take a hot bath with some leeks, carrots, celeriac and greens?
That chicken sure looks angry enough to attack, yet is allowing the girl to hold it in her lap. Makes you wonder what poultry can get so ticked off about.
Reminds me of Dorothy Gale and her chicken Billina
This is one a number of photos that Lewis Hine took in West Virginia in 1921. West Virginia established a Child Welfare Commission in 1921. At that time, the state had stiffened its laws requiring school attendance for children between 14 and 16. And the state was also in the midst of changing their laws regarding child labor. The National Child Labor Committee wanted Hine to highlight the state’s efforts.
