Florence Kuwata practicing with the batons at Manzanar Relocation Center, 1943. View full size. Photograph by Ansel Adams.
Only Ansel Adams would have thought of this shot. She's blocking the sun and it makes her glow. The smile on her face only makes her more radiant. It's a gorgeous photograph.
Amazing that while she, her family and all Japanese-Americans were sent away to camps because of the way they looked (ie. Japanese), here she is continuing to be an All-American kid.
[It's wasn't all Japanese Americans. Just the people on the West Coast who chose not to move to the eastern part of the country, or had nowhere in the East where they could stay. During the war a lot of folks left the relocation camps for jobs in the East. Aiko Hamaguchi, for instance. - Dave]
