Washington, D.C. "F. Murphy, Catholic University, 1920." Outstanding in his field. National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
Being from CUA, had to find where this was taken and I believe it was shot where the Dominican House of Studies now stands, across Michigan Avenue from the Main Campus. I think that is Gibbons Hall to the left and Michigan Avenue is following those telephone poles and just a cow track, literally, to what it is today. The dark building behind him could be Albert Hall, now gone.
Likely not too much worry about the loss of a shoe on a play with those heavily-laced boots.
Must have taken a dinger on that left elbow!
And the men were steel.
How would you like to line up across from this guy? He has a very intimidating stare.
One of the reasons I love this site is it brings forth every once in a while a photo with immense power. The look on this young mans face the empty field and stark buildings along with the rip in his jersey brings a wordless poignancy to the photo. Definitely a favorite.
