A time-honored tradition: the ritual dismemberment of the Thanksgiving turkey, performed by my father in, yes, the Salmon Kitchen. Shortly after I took this bounce-flash Vericolor negative, the remains were conducted to the dining room, where they fulfilled their destiny at the hands and mouths of eight eager celebrants. Sic transit gloria meleagris.
I have the very same wall pocket that is hanging behind your father. Mine is also filled with a thriving vine. Must be a requirement for a happy kitchen!
The phrase "Sic transit gloria agris" translates from Latin as "Thus passes the glory of the fields", but how does "mele" (translated: badger) fit into Thanksgiving? This wasn't a Redneck Thanksgiving, was it?
[Meleagris gallopavo is what's right in front of your nose, at the end of that fork. -Dave]
Dave: Thanks for the update.
but a photograph is the only way to preserve a 1983 vintage turkey for all time, along with the memories and longings for loved ones of festive times past. (Sorry to be monopolizing the comment boards today but like the lady who has fallen and can't get up, I'm talking and I can't shut up).
But your dad makes it look doable. Happy Thanksgiving tterrace, to you and yours in Northern California. It's so kind of you to share so many pictures from your terrific collection with all of us over the years.
You're killing me tterrace! I don't get turkey for a few more hours but I swear I smell it right out of the photo. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
All my best Thanksgiving wishes to the Shorpy Family. My favourite spot to visit when skies are gloomy and things look bleak.
As a child, I can recall this scene replayed so many times in the kitchens of my Italian grandparents, which were very much like your parents' kitchen. It brings back wonderful memories (and smells) that I long for even today.
Che Dio ti benedica e Cent' anni.
