Washington, D.C., 1921. "Salvation Army House girls." Babe Ruth says: "A Home Run for the Salvation Army Home Service Fund means at least a dollar from you and a dollar from me. Let's bat a thousand per cent in this shop right now." National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
The Salvation Army is not a "charitable organization," it is a protestant church like the Baptists or Presbyterians. That being said, the Salvation Army has always been one of the churches that truly embraces the Christian concepts of charity and giving that is sometimes missing from other groups.
They put the better looking girls out front in short skirts showing ankles, but what is that face inside the SA window to the left of the left side girl? Egads! And it looks like a puma cat right behind her shoulder - I'm not "lion".
1921 was one of his hottest hitting years. He had 59 home runs, 171 runs batted in and 378 batting average.
I'm guessing this fund-raising may have been gearing up for the S.A. Easter giveaway as evidenced by the straw hats, floral baskets and white accents. I second the motion by Mal Fuller that the Salvation Army is perhaps our greatest charity. All of my uncles were in the army during WW2 and all of them praised the S.A. as the #1 charitable agency to G.I.s (in their opinions) at that time.
The woman on the left is absolutely beautiful. Wow! Now where did I park the DeLorean?
One pair pointed in, one pair parallel, one pointing out. I am positive this is a key to their personality types. All so beautiful! I know young women like these three and they would not go near a Salvation Army today, except maybe to shop.
The Ruth babe's stance is entirely different, of course.
I am almost embarrassed to say it, but these may be the best looking Salvation Army Girls I've ever seen.
The work of the Salvation Army was important then and it is still important today. It's one of our few great charitable organizations.
When the woman on the left got dressed that morning, she probably thought she would subtly steal the other women's thunder in the upcoming photo shoot by wearing a) a tallish hat, b) interesting trim on her skirt, and c) large, decorative buckles on her shoes. After all, it was for the Salvation Army; how hard would it BE to stand out in a crowd?
She must have been miffed when she got there and saw what the woman in the middle was wearing.
But I only see Two babes, a dog and a Bambino.
