Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, circa 1901. "Golf at Mount Pleasant House, White Mountains." 8x10 glass negative, Detroit Publishing Co. View full size.
You have posted another photograph, from the opposite angle, and dated 1900 (which is the correct year), of J.H. Taylor hitting his tee shot across these same railroad tracks. Don't know for certain, but I believe this picture was taken on that same day in 1900, during the long American tour of the great British golfers Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor. Some sort of Big Match has just begun or is just about to begin.
That other picture is at https://www.shorpy.com/node/14073.
To the right of the practice net are sandboxes. One would make a small mound of sand to prop-up your ball before driving.
I think I would wait a few minutes for fewer people to be on it!!!
Besides the myriad of human vignettes, the background shows well the glacial geologic history of the area with the drumlins (rounded hills) and erratic boulders left behind when the ice melted.
There's so much going on in this photo. I love the little boy in the sailor suit with his nanny!
Back in those days you played with a mashie, niblick, brassie and a spoon and those were just the golf clubs !
With the big bow on his hat and holding his nanny's hand looks like real trouble to me. Yes sir, and saying things like "gosh" and "oh, yeah, sez who?" and "so's your old man."
I can't stand here all day!
