July 17, 1908. Actors field day benefit for the New York Home for Destitute Crippled Children. Lillian Lee at the Polo Grounds "as first base." View full size. 5x7 glass negative, George Grantham Bain Collection.
Wouldn't you know it, that someone would comment on seeing evidence that this woman has a (I will say it) nipple under her shirt! It bugs me to no end that, here in the USA, female nipples are almost the only things that are considered too obscene to show, now! Verbal references to, and even images of, various sexual practices are aired on on public TV now, where children can see them, but as long as the female nipples are covered or blurred, that is acceptable! Pretty twisted, in my opinion!
PS, I wouldn't blame you a bit for not posting this, but I couldn't resist the temptation to say something!
[Really! You? - Dave]
That T-shirt looks so modern it's scary! I did a double take when I saw which year this was taken! Is this enough proof of time travel?
New York Home for Destitute Crippled Children?? For Pete's sake!
As Conceptjunkie says Lillian Lee is demure in this photo, that's true, but also, she looks like she has been mixing it up in the ball game, her shirt is dirty and her hair is mussed, right on!
I like that all the men are wearing hats, even the "crunch" guy.
I agree with Denny, the details are fascinating. Ms. Lee's pose is very cute and demure. She seems maybe a little embarrassed at being photographed, but it's all for a good cause. I am particularly amused by her oven mitt pants.
Looks like she was a busy actor back in the day - http://www.ibdb.com/person.asp?id=49327
Also somewhat interesting to note, but the Giants (residents of the Polo Grounds) were in Chicago that day, where they lost, 1-0. The Cubs went on that season to win their last world series to date.
You can see more than the text on her ribbon, *cough, cough*
Notice the U.S. flag she's holding behind herself? Look at the photographers on the left, hefting--what, Graflexes?--all shooting someone, probably at home plate. What's the guy in the boater on the left doing: crunches? :) Is that a Budweiser advert out there at the left center field wall? And what was in that box behind Lillian to her right? Baseballs? Love photos like this!
