Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, circa 1907. "Entrance to Point Park." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
it looks only slightly less like it's made of papier mâché in the colour photo.
I was trying to figure out why the ladies were on the right side of the front gate instead of out front. Finally I saw the tops of two gate columns behind the wooden or metal fence on the right. Apparently it lead to a necessary room or perhaps an entrance into the park it became. Googling around, this spot seems to be on the Civil War trail as North and South struggled to capture the heights overlooking Chattanooga. It is said that one can see seven States from there. BTW - anyone know how that "castle moat" type of gate with chains works?
It looks like it still exists today. Except for the pavement, pretty much unchanged.
