Aboard the U.S.S. Maine in 1896. "A fancy dress ball." Our second look at these seafaring thespians aboard the ill-fated battleship. 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative by Edward Hart, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
You would be surprised how creative sailors can be when it is time to dress up. Any of you here that have been though or know a person that has been through a Shellback ceremony on both the giving and receiving end of such an event will heartily attest to that fact. Nothing scary here, just shipmates from the past saying hello.

Scary stuff Dave, scary stuff. Especially the third one standing from the left.
