He looks like one of the guys in the old photos of Marconi ops -- like on Titanic, etc.
That operator looks vaguely familiar. Either I've seen this photo before or the operator is famous.
I believe the operator is F.E. Handy, W1BDI, well known ARRL headquarters communications manager. There is a much later (1942) photo of him on the cover of the April, 1989 issue of QST.
