July 1941. Swimming hole at Pine Grove Mills, Pennsylvania. View full size. Photograph by Edwin Rosskam for the Farm Security Administration.
of the times we would go swimming it the stock pond. Cows and scum on the water in one end, and us not knowing any better having a good time on the other end. No one ever got sick.
Today the path down the hill and the pond would both need wheelchair access, the water would be checked daily for carcinogens and bacteria, seven lifeguards would be required and fees would be charged; in short, the lawyers and bureaucrats would shut it down.
This is what heaven is like- it's the middle of summer, you're 11 years old, you swim in the pond when you're not riding your bike, and every night you have pie for dessert.
This was in Pine Grove Mills ... it is no longer there, has a house on it now. It was right before Chestnut Street going up the mountain.
Does anyone know exactly where this was located. Several people have been asking here in State College. Thanks Jen
Almost expect to see Polly Benedict sashay down the path
I lived in Pine Grove Mills and remember this swimming hole very well!!!!!!!!!! It was a wonderful place to grow up.
i love this picture ..life was so simple then - i would love to be a kid and spend the summers in a town with a swimming hole .
