This was very early in the lifetime of U.S.-built self-sealing fuel tanks because patents had just been issued that year. Check Wikipedia for their history. Here's a segment from the 1943 documentary "All Out For Victory" with one of those almost-British narrators. "Yes, I get into working on some queer things. I sure do."
