1920. Montgomery County, Maryland. "Sandy Spring Bank Robbery." The First National Bank in Sandy Spring, where on April 26, 1920, seven armed robbers killed one employee, locked the rest in the vault and made off with $5,000 in cash and securities. $5,000 divided by seven is roughy $714 each which bought more in 1920 than it does now.
Sandy Spring Bank is still in business with some thirty branches from Annapolis into No. Va., including the building seen here. I haven't been in, but I suspect security arrangements have been improved somewhat.
You just don't see many tires inside a Bank these days unless they're attached to a car. I wonder if they were collateral?
