Jacksonville, Florida, circa 1910. "Residences, corner Laura and Ashley Streets." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
We can than The First Baptist Church for the current "enhancements" to the view. There is a house a few blocks away still standing that is very similar to the the one on the corner in the photo from 1910. For years it housed The Seminole Club but I think it closed and is for sale. Majestic house, just like this one.
My, oh, my, look at the precisely trimmed hedges and other greenery (black and grayery?) for that corner house, with credit due, I'd think, to the broom-sweeping gent at the curb.
If ever a song comes to mind referring to this photo, it would have to be a Joni Mitchell song with the lyrics, "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot". I do hope that these stately homes were relocated. I am so sad to see this kind of destruction and in place an ugly square box built!
