Detroit circa 1914. "Construction work -- grade separation from Buchanan Street." The interesting bits here are all in the distance, including a cameo by the monolith from "2001." Detroit Publishing glass negative. View full size.

We have several streets in my town being paved right now and this looks amazingly like one two blocks from us. I started laughing when I saw this and thought, "This looks like outside our front door!"
Another photo, probably of this same job, shows a large portable concrete mixer. The caption mentions that the recipe probably calls for a wagon load of sand, because a Detroit United Railways trolley locomotive crane that runs on these tracks is lifting a horse drawn dump cart full of sand up above the mixer while the unhitched horses watch from the roadway.
Looks like we've found the location Kubrick used, they just built Detroit around it!
In the far background: Elmer the Elongated Horse!
