Our latest from the Janet & Kermy Kodachromes is labeled "Nawakwa 1957." Which I am pretty sure is not a Bill Murray movie. View full size.
This is definitely Camp Nawakwa in Arendtsville, PA, presumably after an ol' refreshing swim at the lower camp pool. Pretty exciting to see my childhood camp featured on here!
so if it was a heater it would have been more effective if it had been lower to the floor. Radio. Probably had to twist the wire coat hanger to rotate the whole set to get better reception!
Interesting that an Ojibwe [Chippewa] word is used for the name of Boy Scout camp so far out east although the Ojibwe of the Great Lakes belong to the Algonquian language family which includes the northeastern geographical area. The word "nawakwa" pronounced as: nah-wah-kwah means "in the midlle of the woods." In comtemporary Ojibwe writing system, the word is spelled: "naawaakwaa." Just a tidbit of information that one only finds on Shorpy.
I'd say sound. But the real question is why would these guys say: "Hey, take a picture for the kids of us in our funny hats and boxers"?
speaker grille, & too many knobs for a heater. I vote radio.
So, is the hanging box a big old radio or some kind of heater? My guess is radio, but I can't tell.
Presumably, the Adirondack Mountain Club's Camp Nawakwa in Harriman State Park, New York. It's a very popular camping spot that's been around for decades.
[There were a number of Nawakwas -- Camp Nawakwa in Pennsylvania; this one, Nawakwa Lodge, affiliated with the Boy Scouts' Order of the Arrow, is in Virginia. - Dave]
I can't tell for sure what that hanging item is in the upper left corner. A case could be made that this dorm or clubhouse or retreat needs some heat, so it's a heater, but I'll bet it's a large-size radio, to catch up on the local baseball game in season.
