Miss Laura Bryn, daughter of the Norway's ambassador to Washington, gets into her car on November 2, 1922. View full size. National Photo Co. Collection.
Finding this is a real trip -- this is my grandma, who married Francis Winslow and settled in Washington, D.C., and lived until 1981. The comment about the devilish grin -- she never lost that. She was lots of fun. We have lots of photos of her. She was very popular in the 1920s, a real "flapper" -- we still have her flapper dresses.
[There are a dozen photos of your grandmother in the LOC archive. Click here and type her name into the top search field. - Dave]
Her father was Helmer Halvorsen Bryn, born in Romedal (Norway) 23. sept 1865. He was one of the most important persons during the dissolution of the swedish/norwegian union that finished in 1905.
I'll bet there were quite a few fellas ready to follow her back to Norway...
Miss Laura has a devilish grin! And I must admit her stockings are beguiling. I love every bit of her put-together look.
Glass above and below the bar. If I'm not mistaken it was fairly common to have the option for the windshield to fold down when the convertible roof was down.
Best guess is that it is the fuel door or maybe even the gas cap. Position is a bit odd from a modern perspective but we really don't have an idea about the size of the car.
2 quick questions about her car:
*Is the front windshield glass all the way across with a bar in the middle? (Glass above the bar only? Below the bar only?)
*That thigh-high circle behind Ms. Bryn...is that the fuel door?
