Detroit circa 1904. "Whitney Opera House." Now playing: Pauline Fletcher in the "sensational scenic melodrama A Hidden Crime." View full size.
The Garrick Theatre was located on east side of Griswold Street just north of Michigan Avenue.
The second story of the building on the right houses a business with the curious name of Burton's Abstract Office. This seems to be the offices of the Burton Abstract and Title Company founded by Clarence Burton which had offices on Griswold Street where this picture is taken. A company with the same name appears to be still operating today in Flint and Saginaw.
By 1926 The Whitney Opera Theater will be known as the Garrick Theater. On October 24, 1926 Houdini went on with a show at the Garrick with a 104 degree fever from peritonitis. He left the show and was taken to Grace Hospital. The Garrick was Harry Houdini’s last magic venue.
