Dead Letter Office, probably in Washington. D.C. September 22, 1922. Somebody claim those tires! View full size. National Photo Company Collection.
Right left of the malt syrup boxes there are upside-down smashed boxes tagged as "GLASS"... no wonder why they never had been claimed.
I think I need a case of Malt Syrup.
Ah Bartleby! Ah humanity!
This photo is great! It reminds me of a "what-we-did-before-credit-cards" story that my great uncle used to tell. When he moved his family from Montana to Arizona by car in the 1930's (?) he was concerned that his car tires were not in any condition to withstand the arduous interstate trek. But alas, there was no money to buy new tires. The solution? Switch the much newer tires from my great grandfather's car with the tires from my uncles car. (The older ones were OK for driving around town.) Then when my uncle arrived in Arizona, found a job and saved enough money to purchase a new tire, he would MAIL a Montana tire back to his dad - one at a time! It probably took several months to get the new set of tires, but no one bought tires (or much of anything else!) on credit in those days.
I WANT THE BOX OF JELLO
