Santa Barbara, 1951. "Actress Lana Turner and daughter Cheryl Crane." Who, seven years after this picture was snapped, had a fatal run-in with her mother's gangster boyfriend. Photo by Earl Theisen for Look magazine. View full size.
The actors playing Lana and Johnny provided one of that film's funnier scenes when they ran into the policemen played by Kevin Spacey and Guy Pearce.
The fatality in the run-in was Mr. Johnny Stompanato, a local LA hood with mob connections. He threatened to kill her mother Lana Turner. The kid did what was necessary to prevent that from occurring.
Artie Shaw, for example. Mr. Shaw was a great recording artist and a brilliant musician. Artie Shaw was a relentless self-improver,and decided to force this regime on his wives. Reading classics, listening to high brow music, etc.Nothing was good enough for Artie!
On the good side,he also toured tirelessly during the WW2 to entertain the soldiers in the South Pacific theater of operations.
Somehow, his annoying and controlling personality attracted the likes of Lana Turner,Judy Garland,Ava Gardner, and Kathleen Winsor,(author of Forever Amber).
Sad to say, women still flock like moths to a flame to a real son-of-a-bitch. Money, power and fame will do it.
And poor Lana found out, later on with Lex Barker and Johnny Stompanato!

Lana Turner looks much different than in the 1940 pictures. She'd had a pretty hard life, in my opinion.
Cher was named after Cheryl Crane.
