Chattanooga, Tennessee, circa 1942. "Defense plant workers at Chattanooga Stamping & Enameling." Office of War Information. View full size.
Actually both of you are correct because the troops would say "Your Right" in response to the DI when the right foot struck the ground.
I wonder how many of those who served such a vital purpose during the war ever regretted not going into military service. It must have been hard during the war to be an able bodied male and not in uniform and I suspect for the rest of their lives people would ask these men where they served during the war.
I am grateful to all our wartime vets and those who supported the war effort back home, and here in the USA.
Ain't no use in lookin' back,
Jody's got your Ca-dil-lac.
Ain't no use in lookin' down,
Ain't no discharge on the ground.
Sound Off!
(Yeah, StanFluoride, guess you had to be there.)
The cadence caller, usually the DI, is the one saying
"You had a good home but you left" etc. and the marching troops are replying. "You're right!"
Guess you had to be there.
It's "Your right" because the friendly drill instructor is referring to the foot on that side, not to the unlikely opinion by the DI that you, the trainee, are right about anything.
These guys were too good for Jody. He's back at home with your girl. He lived well into the Vietnam Era as well:
You had a good home but you left / You're right
You had a good home but you left / You're right
Jody was there when you left / You're right
Your baby was there when you left / You're right
Sound off! / 1,2
Sound off! / 3,4
Cadence count! / 1,2,3,4,1,2...3,4!
I am guessing that Jody is somewhere in that assemblage.
