Haka: Traditional ancestral war cry, dance or challenge from the Māori people of New Zealand.
New Zealand, 1913. "Maori boy performing a haka on the beach, Northland." Glass plate negative by Arthur Northwood. View full size.
A viewing of the clip in JeffK's comment, as well as several others discovered therein, reveals that a most diverse population of apparently enthusiastic haka performers exists in New Zealand, including many whose ethnic roots do not lie in Polynesia and several women as well. The ritual appears tailor-made for military units, stressing unity of performance while allowing for differences in style, and infusing the performers with a spirit of unity in the face of adversity. Though probably not suited to application against machine guns with interlocking fields of fire, the ritual, practiced in a concealed position, might well be helpful to one's morale just prior to executing a bayonet charge!
This young man must have been watching Miley Cyrus.
Wait, he's probably dead by now.
Is this Miley Cyrus's long lost great-grandfather?
This honorable and ancient tradition brought to mind the not so honorable recent public displays of Miley Cyrus.
I did a search and surprisingly found a presentation titled: The New Zealand Haka One Dance. Many Purposes.by Miley Cyrus on 27 September 2010

It's not the work of the tabloid fodder Miley Cyrus, but a student somewhere. Regardless of who created the presentation, it's interesting and well done.
I love it! My college boyfriend danced in the Maori section at the Poynesian Cultural Center, Laie, Hawaii. The faces were his favorite part of it!
