in 1917 at the age of of 23, my great aunt Clarissa joined the Red Cross and went overseas to drive ambulances like these in France. Returning from the front with a souvenir artillery shell from Verdun and a bolstered level of self confidence and worldliness, she had a hard time fitting back into the quiet lifestyle that genteel Northern Virginia country ladies of her generation were expected to lead.
