Lee Tires of Conshohocken, Pa was acquired by Goodyear and the brand name may still exist. My dad had a 1923 Nash and I'm pretty sure he would have never attempted this, no matter how closely space the spikes were.
I'll bet the Lee Tire people were anxiously awaiting the positive outcome if this test.
Note that the nails are spaced very closely together. The spacing means that the amount of weight on any particular nail is fairly light, not enough to cause the nail to puncture the tire. It's the same concept used when people lie on beds of nails.
