The police officer obviously had to leave to round up another member of his posse to help guard the farebox which is visible in the open trolly door. When I took DSR buses to high school in Detroit in the early 1960's, all were equipped with heavy farebox safes in which you deposited your student discount fare of twenty five cents. They were attached to the chrome rails at the front of the bus where you boarded. The boxes were so heavy that they vibrated like crazy when the bus reached cruising speed. The drivers steered with their left hand and kept the right on the top of the box to dampen the vibration of the box.
