Could Frank Guilfoyle be our tailor next door?
"Dr. Daniel Bernard Lynch married, June 14, 1922, in Albany, Mary M. Guilfoyle, daughter of Frank J. and Catherine (Doyle) Guilfoyle. Frank J. Guilfoyle was for many years general manger of the Dobler Brewing Company, Albany, New York and he is now engaged in the tailoring business in New York City. Dr. and Mrs. Lynch are the parents of Frank Guilfoyle Lynch, born September 20, 1923, and Daniel B. Lynch, Jr., born January 1, 1925."
Hey Robert! Good to see this picture. My husband is Max's great-grandson (Selma's grandson). Someone bought the brand and you can still buy the cigars online under his name.
My dad was Robert who was the youngest of the Schwarz children. I remember Selma and Herbert but Max's other children Arthur and Stella had died before I was born. I also never met Max or Philipin. I had dinner with George Gans (who is the son of Regina .. Max's sister) a little over a year ago. My mom turned 91 years young 2 weeks ago. It was very special for me to discover this website and find the photos that defined my heritage. WOW!
I am a cousin of Max Schwarx, or "Uncle Max" as he was always spoken of in my family. He was married to my father's aunt I believe. He died before I was born but I remember his son Herbert Schwarz from my childhood.
There's a science fiction novel titled And Having Writ by Douglas Benson. One of the scenes takes place in this shop!
I walked by here this evening. This stretch of Broadway is a bit rundown with lots of dubious b-level shops that never seem to have customers. The store has been split in two. The left side is a footwear shop and the right sells hair extensions. The gates were down but I'd be surprised if the storefront arches were still intact.
