From sometime in the 1950s in the vicinity of Columbus, Georgia, comes this unidentified pugilist. 4x5 acetate negative from the News Archive. View full size.
I checked Google Images and BoxRec.com for any possible clues to his identity, and except for one very shaky possibility, came up with nothing. It could be that he was a "transient" boxer stationed at nearby Fort Benning, and not identified with Columbus.
"Baxado" is correct about the gloves, they are what is known as "bag gloves," made to use while hitting the heavy bag, or speed bag.
so close together and 20 amp circuit ("T" slot) may indicate a Phenix City, Alabama, location where pinball machines once lined the walls in a gambling hall/boxing venue.
“Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth.”
If he is truly getting ready to lead with his left, which is what it appears, he needs to bring that right hand up or he is vulnerable to a quick left jab to the jaw. Or perhaps he is getting ready to throw a right, in either case he needs to bring his other hand up, one of the very first things taught to aspiring boxers is to protect yourself at all times.
The lonely boxer would get a flood of comments if he'd been sitting in a 1957 Chevy Bel Air.
We might not know who he was, but he could have been a contender!
This poor lad has been languishing on Shorpy for several days now garnering a few "reads" and "likes" but no comments. So I'll note that he resembles the actor Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio and that one can see a nice bit of WireMold surface electrical conduit with ungrounded receptacles in the background.
My dad boxed for the Royal air Force and his gloves did not look like that.
Are they a special type?
Also, he looks a little short to be a boxer.
[Thanks michaeljy. Now I know]
