Whistle is blown and the play is over. Will have to uncover the pile to see if the ball is over the goal line. The goal post is actually on the line at that time instead of the back of the end zone. The change to the back of the end zone was made by the NCAA in 1927. Main reason was to prevent injuries to the players.
A couple players appear to be bareheaded. Another seems to be wearing a knit hat. When did helmets become standard gear?
I believe that's the legendary Jim Thorpe standing in the middle of the pile. He played for Carlisle from 1907-1912.
