I currently work on this block. Sadly, my office building has replaced the beautiful building on the corner with those light fixtures sticking out which was a hotel (its name has slipped my mind at the moment). That's the corner of Fifth Avenue and 44th Street.
In a matter of a short few years 1902-1913 it went from one auto in a sea of horses to one horse in a sea of autos. Amazing!
If you look in the rear view window of the nearest car you can see a man wearing a fine hat, and (what appears to be) a lady sitting to his left. It's fun to imagine where they might have been going that day dressed so fine.
When did 5th Avenue become a one way street?
