Dec. 23, 1921. Washington, D.C. "Little Betty Sze, daughter of the ambassador from China, and Madame Sze meet the American Santa Claus, who called to visit her at the legation today." National Photo glass negative. View full size.
Here's a portrait of her from 1916.
Little Betty looks a bit nervous about the man in the red suit, mirroring the expression of countless kids on their first trip or two to meet Santa. At least she's not screaming. It's a beautiful picture.
I believe that is an old Steiff bear, Which would now be worth a fortune. Great picture. Merry Christmas to everyone involved with, or just thankful for Shorpy.com.
Santa's bag advertises the Cinderella Shops with location of 14th and G streets. They were located in the Cinderella Building (615-619 14th Street) per the 1923 Washington City Directory and included The Cinderella Candy Shop, The Cinderella Gift Shop, The Cinderella Infant Shop, and The Cinderella Tea Company.
This building in Adams Morgan was the Chinese embassy for many years.
What a beautiful mom and daughter! Santa looks like he needs to eat more cookies. He's not "..chubby and plump; a right jolly old elf.."!
Merry Christmas, everyone!
