Circa 1903. "Symphony Hall -- Boston, Mass." And yet another sign advertising The Great Creatore and his Italian Band. 8x10 glass negative. View full size.
Symphony Hall was built in 1900 and was the first concert hall in the US (and perhaps the world) constructed on scientific principles of acoustics. It is still the one of the best in America.
So many blank rectangles all over the building, awaiting the carving of names? Dates? And yet, in the modern photo from streetview, they're still blank.
This seems to be a common occurrence -- blank places on the building facade, awaiting "something" to be carved there, "later"...which never happens.
Giuseppe Creatore's son Luigi also had a big career in music. Ever see the "Hugo and Luigi" logo/production credit on a record label (probably RCA Victor or Roulette)? That was Luigi (who died just last December) and his cousin Hugo Peretti.
In the 1980's I lived around the corner from Symphony Hall in Boston. It is stunningly beautiful inside and a great place for a concert or show. I've seen everyone from the Boston Pops, to Paula Poundstone and Shirley Jones there.
If you've seen movie The Music Man, you may remember the scene where Professor Harold Hill tells the crowd, "You’ll feel something akin to the electric thrill I once enjoyed when Gilmore, Liberatti, Pat Conway, The Great Creatore, W.C. Handy and John Philip Sousa all came to town on the very same historic day."
Here he is with his band in a Library of Congress image I've used as my Facebook cover photo. Click to view full size.
Never heard of Mr. Creatore before today.
