Nov. 16, 1923. Washington, D.C. "Shura Cherkassky, father Isaac & mother Lydia." The Russian-born piano prodigy at the age of 14. National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
I saw Cherkassky perform in Columbia, Missouri sometime during the 1992-93 academic year, when I was a visiting assistant professor at Mizzou. It may not have been the best piano recital I ever heard, but it was certainly worthwhile ...
His obit in a British newspaper says he knocked two years off his age to be a "child prodigy" for a bit longer.
[Aha. I wondered why some of his bios gave a birth year of 1909. - Dave]
I guess tagging the walls has been with us forever.
This must be a misprint, as this elderly couple looks far more like Grandparents then Parents to this 12 year old boy prodigy.
[Lydia was 51 in this photo; Isaac was about 10 years older. - Dave]
