Six men and a horse in this St. Augustine, Florida, street view from around 1865. View full size. Left half of a glass-plate stereograph made by Samuel A. Cooley.
I love St. Augustine. Been there several times when I lived in Cocoa Beach. The bed and breakfast places are great. If you get there be sure and take the horse drawn tours. You will get a mini history lesson in early life. How to my "tabby." Early concrete floors.
As for the "ancient limestone blocks," remember St. Augustine is the oldest town in America. First settled in 1565 by the Spanish. So some of the block work could have already been approaching 400 years old when the picture was taken.
Also my wife and I had lunch in the Hotel Casino swimming pool, in the deep end I believe.
Hard to imagine how people lived in that heat and humidity back then.
Pretty neat how the limestone blocks looked ancient even 143 years ago. Lots of history in that town.
Looks like the "ghost" is actually a man on horseback.
[There are two ghosts. One is sitting down on the left. - Dave]
Looks like the ghost image is that of the man standing closest to it. Check the baggy, ahead of their time bellbottoms. Also the boots semi obscured by the same.
Reminds me of my family vacations to Florida!
["You kids pipe down. Don't make me stop the oxcart!" - Dave]
It looks like someone was sitting on the left side and moved before the picture was done leaving a "ghost" image.
[Yes, one of the things I like about these old photographs. And now they're all ghosts. - Dave]
