May 3, 1926. "Apple blossoms at Winchester, Virginia." Nature's palette bursting forth in a riotous rainbow of grays. 5x7 inch glass negative. View full size.
These young ladies were probably in Winchester for the 1926 Apple Blossom Festival, possibly as contestants in the Miss Apple Blossom contest. The AB queen that year was Miss Priscilla Bridges; the Minister of Crown was Gov. Harry F. Byrd.
The event is still going strong, and this year runs from April 28 -May 7.
The dresses look as as colorful as the blossoms. Only one of these New Women is wearing a hat. Ten years earlier, it would have been a different story.
At least two of those girls are spilling out of their shoes.
