Washington, D.C., circa 1921. "Garfield Hospital." Where Mother and Baby are doing fine. National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
In the 1940s my mother-in-law (b. 1923) worked as a nurse in Germany. She described how, in those days, new mothers were required to lie flat as they “recovered” for up to a week in the hospital. After so many mothers died of pneumonia, it was finally determined that the prolonged bed rest actually contributed to the high death rate.
We now know better. As anyone who has had surgery (even major surgery) knows, they get you up and walking right away, even on the day of surgery.
