February 1940. Shoveling snow away from the movie entrance in Chillicothe, Ohio. View full size. 35mm nitrate negative by Arthur Rothstein for the FSA.
Most of the blockbusters of my 1970s-80s childhood (Star Wars, Superman, etc.) I saw at the Majestic, which was one of three movie theaters in town (Adena and Central, both gone now, were the others).
I worked in that building as a stage actor for about a year and have spent countless hours in there. The Majestic is a fantastic space, acoustically, and a great architectural treasure of Chillicothe.
The house next door it still there too. Impressive, considering that the photos from the Majestic web site appear to be a downtown area.
This is Joe Manning. Check out the website for the restored Majestic Theater. http://www.majesticchillicothe.org/
[Thanks, Joe. It certainly is grander inside than the exterior would indicate. Who knew that it had such a long and distinguished history! - Dave]
In case anyone is interested, here's a link with details concerning the 1939 movie Balalaika: www.imdb.com/title/tt0031074/
