Circa 1941. "Miscellaneous lot of photographs by Barbara Wright. Tennessee, e.g. Tennessee Valley Authority, Knoxville." Here, we seem to have two city slickers going native in the pre-Happy Meal era. Locally sourced food! View full size.
These plucky city slickers know it's important to dress well while dressing the dinner.
My grandfather used to prepare his own chickens for dining and this is a very messy, stinky job. I can't believe these people are attempting to do it in long-sleeved satin, high heels and fine wool. I think one had to soak the freshly killed chickens in hot water to loosen the feathers, then pull them out, then singe off the stubborn hair and tweeze out the pin feathers. It did not smell anywhere near good during this procedure but shortly thereafter, the cooking aroma was tantalizing as was the taste.
City slicker or not, you never forget the smell.
