I'm struck by the strange setting for this portrait. Outside, I can understand, since you get good, even lighting (looks like it was a cloudy day) without having to set up a flask. But couldn't the photographer have taken the time to clear away the metal pole in the lower right corner? And maybe move the hat out of the frame?

He looks like one of his clients.
H.A.'s funeral home is still in operation as Money & King. A grandson, Francis Howard King, took over the firm after he died.
