November 1938. "Rooming house. Omaha, Nebraska." The McCormick Furnished Apartments. Medium format negative by John Vachon. View full size.
Obviously a former family home--servants' quarters upstairs--repurposed as apartments. I'm never quite certain whether to be happy that poorer people got well-built housing, or sad that the former owners felt compelled to move on. I'm guessing at least one tenant loved the place until (high ceilings and big windows) he got the heating bill.
This building stood where the Civic Auditorium was built in the 1950s. The Music Box Theater can be seen behind the rooming house, a block away to the left in this photo. Originally a big band dance hall with bowling alleys, in its later years it hosted groups such as the Grateful Dead, Devo and the Ramones.
