October 1940. "Harvesting potatoes with a single-row tractor-drawn digger on a farm near Caribou, Maine." Acetate negative by Jack Delano. View full size.
This Farmall Regular has an exposed steering sector, with a spur gear reduction just behind it. Later Farmalls, like the similar F30, had worm gear steering in a large sealed gearbox at the top of the steering post. Due to the worm gear, the shaft from the steering wheel entered the gearbox off to the side, instead of centered like this one.
These early full size Farmalls are a problem for collectors, due to the very wide spaced rear wheels, making them hard to trailer. The smaller F12 + F14 are a modern width, and very easy to haul.
Other than that, they are surprisingly good tractors, considering that they were the first of the line. IH did their homework before starting production.
I thought this might be a Farmall. I checked out a few photos and it may be a Farmall Regular. My family was all International Farmall but more '60s and '70s vintage.
And we're leaving Junior to steer, while Dad (cigarette in mouth) works the dangerous PTO that'll take your arm off in an eyeblink if you get careless.
