The railway is the Sixth Avenue elevated, turning onto Murray Street for a block to jog from Church Street to West Broadway. It quit running in December 1938.
I cannot imagine where is the further course of the railway tracks, behind the bend, when they enter between two buildings.
I'd never noticed the steel girders between the two towers. I thought maybe they were temporary since this photo was taken before the official opening of the building, but they are still there, only painted to blend in with the color of the building.
