Washington, D.C., circa 1926. "Jewish Community Center, 16th and Q Streets N.W." In addition to being the year the JCC was completed, 1926 was also when Washington was equipped with traffic lights ("GO"). National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
A handsome building that the Jewish Community Center (JCC) sold to the city of Washington DC in the early 1970s as its membership moved to the suburbs. It was turned over to Federal City College (now the University of the District of Columbia), then left in limbo until 1990 when the JCC repurchased the building because its single membership in DC was rapidly growing [Wikipedia].
Somewhere along the way someone decided it would be a good idea to put handrails along those front stairs [thumbs up].
I wonder whether modern architects would design these stairs as they did in 1926 and before.
Personally, I would take all of it over modern concrete, steel and glass "architecture", seven days a week, and twice on a sabbath. But then, I am a provincial reactionary with no taste.
