October 1940. "Durham, North Carolina. Five Points, center of city, with Chesterfield cigarette factories in background." Acetate negative by Marion Post Wolcott. View full size.
No river visible, but rails, yes.
Among the many fascinating details in this photo is a fading sign for Chero-Cola. That brand was long gone by 1940 -- it had been sued out of existence by Coke in 1924.
The brand was reincarnated, though, as the famous RC that goes so well with a Moon Pie.
I love looking at all the details when enlarged! Gas stations, people, cars and trucks. I think that’s a house in middle of the business district. Thanks Shorpy!
Duke Chapel is visible in the upper left of the photo. Duke is about three miles west of Old Five Points.
I took my son to his first RB B&B Circus when he was two. He fell in love with the elephants and called them "mumbos."
Everything from soup to butts.
